CITROËNS @ SARATOGA SPRINGS by Jim Corbran, Automotive Columnist Getting psyched-up for my drive to Saratoga Springs for the 40th Citroën Rendezvous, to be held around Father’s Day weekend on the grounds of Lakeside Farms in nearby Ballston Lake. I’ve been to a few of these shows over the years (the actual, open-to-the-public car show is Saturday the 18th), and it never fails to entertain. Citroën was well-known for its out-of-the-ordinary cars back in the day, like the DS, ID, GS, Mehari… the list could go on and on. And a goodly number of them make their way from all over the northeast (and farther) for this annual event. Citroën (along with Peugeot, their partner in Groupe PSA, which now encompasses the two formal rivals under one umbrella) has been in the news lately as they’ve been making noise about possibly returning to the North American market; Citroën withdrew in 1974, while Peugeot held on until 1991. Nothing concrete has emerged as to what vehicles (if any) we might see Stateside, so I headed over to Citroën’s website to see what they’re offering these days. Ahem… these aren’t your father’s Citroëns. Some seem to be very handsome sedans, while others are very capable-looking compacts. There are also vans and SUVs, but nothing I could see to compare to the old DS, SM, 2CV, or even the more recent C6 executive sedan. However, there is this interesting-looking E-Mehari which is just now going on sale in Europe. The original Mehari was a quirky (what else?) little off-road vehicle built from 1968-88. The E-Mehari, as you can guess from its name, is all-electric. A four-seater cabriolet, it has what Citroën calls “…modern, fun styling… with an expressive gaze… (and an) optimistic design.” Love the marketing people! We’ll see if it ever makes it across the ocean. More on Citroën Renzezvous 2016 here. Read more about the Citroën E-Mehari (and other Citroëns) here.
