Anyone care to guess why this 1973 Buick Riviera and its brethren were nicknamed Boattails? Yeah, it’s pretty obvious from this angle, isn’t it? The Boattail Rivs debuted for model year 1971; 1973 was their swan song, as the ’74 models had much more conservative styling from the front doors back. Buick never officially used the Boattail moniker, instead referring to the new styling in their brochure as “motion-sculptured steel and glass that slices off a whole new world for itself.” That sounds a little classier. This black sculpture was spotted a while back in North Tonawanda.
