AUTO SHOW TIME. WHAT’S NEW? Pt.3

AUTO SHOW TIME. WHAT’S NEW? Pt.3

by Jim Corbran

Wrapping up our look at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, which just ended in Detroit…

Nissan Xmotion concept — it’s pronounced “cross-motion” which I thought was a letdown. But if even a few of its design features find their way into new Nissans, I’m onboard. Although I’m not much a fan of these huge wheels, the interior is very 21st (or 22nd) century…

Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept — no, it’s not just your imagination. Concept vehicles (we used to call them concept cars, but, you know…) are often way out there design-wise. Although, the LF-1 looks like something that might make its way into showrooms without a lot of exterior modifications. I do think, however, that they’re raising the bar pretty high naming it Limitless

Infiniti Q Inspiration concept — it seems like the Japanese manufacturers are trying to outdo each other with strange concept names. That being said, I’ll go on record here as saying that I think the Q has the nicest shape of anything I’ve seen at this year’s show. I just hope that glass roof keeps the heat out…

GAC Everge concept— the upswinging doors on this thing alone make it worth looking at. A built-in pod on the roof houses a Segway scooter, and the Everge’s power comes from four electric motors — one at each wheel. No word yet if we’ll ever see GAC vehicles in the USA…

Hyundai NEXO fuel cell vehicle — although the NEXO was unveiled at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, I think it deserves mention here. Some think hydrogen power is the real wave of the future — its only tailpipe emission is water, and the NEXO has a driving range of 497 miles before refueling. And no, there aren’t a lot of hydrogen refueling stations as of yet, but that’s what we said about electrics just a few short years ago…

Next up, the Buffalo Auto Show — February 8-11 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

See you there!
