TONAWANDA, N.Y. – I’m kind of surprised, what with the dearth of interesting colors on offer in today’s new car showrooms, that hardly anybody (if anybody at all) offers anything like the paint choice of today’s RealRide, a 1968 Dodge Polara in the very onomatopoeian-sounding Beige — a color which sounds as exciting as it looks. Ford at least made an effort with Pebble Beige (Lincoln called the same color Desert Sand)… while Volkswagen offered Gobi Beige, Cadillac, in the same vein, went with Sudan Beige; and Chevy’s beige-ish name was Palomino Ivory. Even Toyota offered a Pluto Beige while Opel countered with Sandpiper Beige. Enough about the paint though. Here’s Dodge, talking about the Polara’s size: “…with the solid ride that only cars almost 20 feet long and weighing over 4000 pounds can provide.” With a starting MSRP of $3,005 that’s just about 75¢ a pound (about five cents a pound cheaper than a Sedan de Ville).
