SEATTLE, Washington – When this 1972 BMW 2002 was new it was aimed at a whole different clientele than many of today’s sport sedans. Mostly driven by true driving enthusiasts, the 2002 pretty much cemented BMW’s place as the (self-proclaimed) Ultimate Driving Machine. It also takes us back to a time when they still referred to themselves in ads as the Bavarian Motor Works (Bayerische Motoren Werke in the home market, where the car's name is pronounced Bee Em Vee). BMW had a catchy German phrase used in some of their ads back in the day, and no, it wasn’t Fahrvergnügen (that was Volkswagen), but rather Freude am Fahren — sheer driving pleasure. If the current crop of BMWs has a catchy slogan, it’s been lost on me. Today’s RealRide was photographed back in 2018 by my daughter Katie.
