NEW YORK, N.Y. – Fans of the old tv show “Car 54 Where Are You?” may (or may not) recognize this 1961 Plymouth Belvedere as the 53rd precinct patrol car of officers Toody and Muldoon. The NYPD cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s did not have the red and white paint scheme seen on today’s RealRide, which we photographed back in 2014 at a display of old NYPD vehicles at the New York International Automobile Show at the Javits Center. Rather, they had black front fenders & lower rear quarter panels, white roof and trunk lid, and the remainder of the car was dark green, like the illustration at the bottom of the page. Car 54 was filmed on the streets of New York, and producers didn’t want the public to mistake Car No. 54 for an actual patrol car so, seeing that the series was filmed in black and white, this red and white Plymouth looked pretty much like any black, green, and white patrol car when viewed on the television screen.
