EAST AMHERST, N.Y. – This 1975 Volkswagen isn’t just any old Super Beetle… it’s a La Grande Bug, a special edition model available in your choice of two colors (three in Canada) with extras such as a sliding metal sunroof, leather-grained seating surfaces and steering wheel covering, Rosewood appilqués on the dash, color-coordinated carpeting, and custom silver colored steel wheels. When we saw this Viper Green Metallic example last summer at a Pautler’s Drive-In cruise night (the other U.S. color was Ancona Blue Metallic; in Canada you could also choose Hellas Metallic [a goldish hue]), it was For Sale. Perhaps by now it has a new owner. As VW said of La Grande Bug in its literature: “You don’t drive in it, you arrive in it.”
