ALDEN, N.Y. – It’s not every day that you run across a 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit L Diesel. And if you do, odds are it’s not at a car show. We saw this one though at this past summer’s huge annual event in Alden. Surprisingly (to me) the Rabbit L Diesel carried VW’s lowest price tag in 1984, but not so surprisingly it also boasted of the highest mileage of any new Volkswagen that year. The Diesel was a 1600cc unit which put out 52 hp (Rabbit Diesel owners aren’t in much of a hurry to get anywhere!), while 1700cc gasoline-powered engines were available in carbureted (65 hp) and fuel-injected (74 hp) versions. California buyers? No carburetors for you!! I always enjoy running across seldom-seen vehicles at car shows/cruise nights, where they’re either totally ignored by fans of the usual fare, or doted on by folks like me. Keep ‘em coming!
