THOROLD, Ont. – Was it just some advertising confusion, or did the Ford Motor Company actually use different model designations north and south of the border for these cars? This base model 1964 Mercury Comet 202, according to one Mercury brochure, was simply badged as a Comet in the states, but according to most of the reference material I came across, going up the ladder, Comet models were 202, 404, Caliente, and Cyclone . The first brochure I mentioned listed the base model as having no special designation, while the rest of the lineup were the Custom (midline) and S-22 (top line). This, I assume, was an early printing, as you can find a ton of US-based 202s, 404s, and Calientes on the internet. The French-language Canadian brochure also listed the 202, 404, and Caliente.
