RealRides of WNY #2507 (on the road) - c1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – I’ve certainly traveled down the “What car would I buy if I won the lottery” road before. Today’s installment has me lusting for this c1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE coupé, seen at the 2012 Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car Show. There’s just something classy and old money about these understated coupes. Showing off without really showing off. And who doesn’t love a car which uses the deformation principle in its design? (See “Das Verformungsprin zip” inset.) A recent Bring-A-Trailer auction featured a lovely V8-powered 1971 280 SE 3.5 example being offered for sale in California. After 31 bids, the hammer came down and the new owner was writing a check for $72,000. Well-bought IMO. Today’s RealRide likely has the original 2.8L inine six (the "280" in the original 280 SE), judging from the lack of a 3.5 badge on the trunklid.
