SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – When the Renault 16 was introduced in 1965, I was a mere lad of thirteen or so, spending my hard-earned pennies on candy bars and car magazines. Not necessarily in that order. I wasn’t a hot-rodder though. I veered more towards Motor Trend and their mostly home-bred reviews… as well as Car and Driver and Road & Track, with their decidedly more international coverage. Even at that age I fancied myself someday being behind the wheel of some exotic (but not expensive) foreign car. If I’d-a seen one of these when I eventually went car shopping I probably would at least have given it a look. (Instead I ended up with a 1967 Sunbeam Imp. A long story for another time.) Produced from 1965-1980, the R-16 was innovative, controversial-looking (at least on this side of the world), and rare (see previous parenthetical comment). I found this early example at the 2016 Citroën Rendezvous, parked in the “other makes” corral.
