ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – You can’t say they weren’t trying. Unfortunately though, not every swing can be a home run. This 1978 AMC Pacer D/L was innovative and distinctive in the compact car class. Its passenger side door was wider to make rear seat entry/exit easier; its acres of glass made it easy to see out of; and its extra width made it very roomy on the inside. Of course, those doors were really heavy, all that glass made it very hot inside on a sunny day, and the extra width (along with all that glass) made it a pretty heavy car which was quite under-powered until a V8 finally became available. At that point, it didn’t matter much as the writing was on the wall, and the Pacer’s tombstone would read “1975-1980.” But today any Pacer at a car show/cruise night is bound to draw a crowd (and rightly so), as this one did at the 2021 Quaker Days Car Show.
