HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hard to believe looking at it, but the insurance company had just declared the family’s 1960 Ford Falcon a total loss 60 years ago, this after getting rear-ended by a 1959 Chevy while waiting to make a left turn. Dad was driving. Just seven years later, the day before my driving test, I was with Dad and behind the wheel of Mom’s ’63 Catalina sitting at the same intersection waiting to make the same left turn when we were sideswiped in a torrential rainstorm by some nut who’d lost control when he noticed the car in front of him was slowing down to make a right. A woman who lived up the street from us was at the stop sign on the side street to witness both accidents. Weird, eh?
