LEWISTON, N.Y. – The quality of this photo, probably processed at a local drug store over 20 years ago, isn’t that great. I say, “Don’t blame the photographer, blame the process!” It was taken at a Volkswagen meet at Joseph Davis State Park, and this c1974 Volkswagen Thing stood out to me for a couple of reasons: it sported a set of rear snow tires in the middle of summer; and it was also wearing a pair of rear quarter panel air intake ducts over the factory engine cooling vents. Couldn’t find one equipped with ducts like this in any of VW’s old brochures, so I’m guessing they were an aftermarket add-on. We found a right-side one for sale online at thethingshop.com for $260, which, according to the description, is an original VW of Mexico part. (FWIW, the photos in the VW of Mexico Thing brochure also do not feature any air ducts. See inset.)
