
WELLAND, Ontario – We saw this 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia at last summer’s Beetlemania event. The K-G was built, not surprisingly, on the Beetle platform, marketed towards those who were looking for something a little sportier-looking. The brochure cover for 1972 says it all (bottom photo).The inside pages go on to tell us how VW decided not to produce the car themselves, but left it up to the folks at the Karmann Coach Works in Osnabrück, Germany to put them together. The car was designed, of course, by the legendary Ghia Studios of Turin, Italy. Hence the Karmann Ghia moniker. We ran into today’s RealRide again a few weeks ago at a weekly cruise night in Thorold, minus the roof and engine compartment racks (below).
