RealRides of WNY #2407 - 1973 Grand Am

They had the right idea when this 1973 Pontiac Grand Am was introduced that year: grab some sales from potential buyers of European sport sedans like the BMW and Volvo maybe. And in my opinion the four-door version of the Grand Am was not too far off the mark. The two-door though, I must say, shot itself in the foot with stereotypical Detroitisms like the louvered rear side quarter windows, which were only made worse with the addition of an optional vinyl top. Could you even buy a 1973 BMW with a vinyl top? Not from the factory, and I’ll bet you couldn’t have found a BMW dealer willing to put an aftermarket top on a 1600 or a 2002, either. The Grand Am’s two-door roofline also offered a drastic contrast to most Euro sport sedan two-doors. Too bad. We saw this nicely preserved one at this summer’s 32ndAnnual Olcott Beach Car Show in Olcott.
