RealRides of WNY - 1980 Datsun 210

The 1980 Datsun 210 came in a wide range of models, from 2- and 4-door sedans to 3-door hatchbacks and 5-door station wagons. This hatchback, which appears to be shod in a set of 280Z rims c1975, was spotted a couple of weeks ago at the construction site of the extension to the Rails-to-Trails pathway in the City of Tonawanda, where it will connect with another trail currently in place near the Erie Canal at Gateway Harbor & Tonawanda Creek. For the past seven years, Buffalo’s Mel Shields — who ironically (or not, Lol…) is a member of Laborers Local 210 — has been using it as his work vehicle. The odometer currently shows around 344,000 miles, about 45,000 of which Shields has put on since buying it. He tells us that by next year it will be looking much more like it did when it left the showroom 38 years ago, but don’t fret, this little hatch will continue on as his primary work vehicle.
