RealRides of WNY - GT Hawk, c1963

Came upon this Studebaker Grand Turismo Hawk (c1963) late last week in Buffalo’s Old First Ward. The Hawk, believe it or not, was based on a heavily modified version of the 1953 cars, which had been repeatedly tweaked over the years. This was the most elegant makeover yet (IMO), introduced for model year 1962, and it continued through 1964. One would have thought that the Hawk would be replaced by the new-for-1963 Avanti coupe — but luckily Studebaker hung on to the Hawk for one more year, as a slew of production bugs delayed many (most?) Avanti orders, and the Hawk was still a viable alternative to those who simply had to have a new, sporty Studebaker. Standard engine for the ’63 GT Hawk was Studebaker’s 289cid V8, rated at 210 hp. An optional Paxton supercharger was available, which Studebaker claimed could “…give you a 40% to 50% increase in reserve power as an extra margin of performance and safety for passing and highway cruising.”
