RealRides of WNY (on the road) - Bermi 400

And now for something completely different — as least as far as RealRides go. Touring the island of Bermuda in a cab with another couple one day this past October, we pulled into the parking lot of the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Cross Bay, up next to this Bermi 400 — a two-passenger fully enclosed all-electric vehicle. From a distance I thought it was some sort of Jeep that we don’t get in North America. Available as rental or for purchase ($18,800 as of this writing) from the island dealership, the Bermi 400 is powered by a 7.5Kw motor, seats two (side-by-side — take THAT, Renault Twizy!), and is equipped with a/c, stereo, Bluetooth, and backup camera. Today’s RealRide even has whitewall tires! Saw a few of these driving around the island, but there seemed to be more Twizys. Not sure why (unless it’s a supply issue) as the Twizy’s passenger sits behind the driver single-file style — and most backseat passengers I saw looked dreadfully claustrophobic. Curiously, the back seats of the Bermis I saw all seemed to be occupied by women, while the males drove. Hmm… Anyway, Bermi 400s come in six different colors (flavors as the dealer tells us): Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Blueberry, Grape, and Banana. It took some digging, but I finally discovered that the Bermi is a Chinese-manufactured vehicle, made by Jiayuan Electrical Vehicles and sold there as the L6e/L7e; it's also sold in Europe as the Jiayuan City Spirit.
