
Designers of the 1955 Oldsmobile 88 seem to have been torn between offering full rear wheel cutouts or full fender skirts. So, they compromised, with squared-off openings partially covered with half-skirts. Removing the skirts, as seen in the hemmings.com photo above, leaves the rear wheel openings with both an unfinished look, and a mismatch with the shape of the ones in the front. Not sure what the thinking was here, as this look was used across the line except for the Ninety-Eight two-door hardtop (bottom photo) and convertible. It wasn’t used at all for MY 1956. We found today’s RealRide a few years ago in Wheatfield.
