It’s rare to see a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500/XL at a car show these days — or anywhere, for that matter. Introduced halfway through the model year, the 500/XL started life right at the top of the full-size Ford heap. “Luxury with a sports car lilt is the theme” is what Ford told us in the brochure. All 500/XLs came with such niceties as front bucket seats, “super-deluxe appointments,” the 500/XL insignia in “jewel-like settings,” and a “full-length XL command console with a personal storage compartment for milady’s handbag or what-have-you.” We came across this nice example last month at a classic car cruise in Brockport. Note the dealer sticker on the trunklid from Max Brothers Ford in Wilmington, Illinois, which the lot boy managed to put on crooked.
