The brochure claimed that this 1976 Mercury Cougar XR-7 was “Among luxurious personal-size cars… as unique in its own class as the Continental Mark IV!” That’s a pretty bold statement. And you have to wonder how many potential Mark IV buyers heard that and said, “Yeah, I’ll take an XR-7 instead for about half the price!” You can tell we were entering the disco era from some of the brochure’s highlighted features, like the elegant Landau vinyl roof, opera windows, and thick shag carpeting; optional was velour cloth upholstery in blue, red, green, gold, or tan/saddle. Available leather seating was offered in black, blue, red, green, white, or the two tone sport accent colors cream/gold and tan/saddle. So many choices! Mercury also offered a dazzling array of 26 exterior colors! We saw this Bright Blue Poly example back in 2017 at a car show in Albion.
