When I came across this 1961 Mercury Meteor 600 this past summer it occurred to me how few Ford Motor Company cars you see these days from 1961. After thinking about it a little more I added the other U.S. manufacturers into the mix as well. Where are they all? Was 1961 a down year for auto sales? I know 1958 certainly was. The Meteor name has an interesting history in North America. It was used for a Ford-sourced car sold in Canada from 1949-61 at Mercury-Lincoln-Meteor dealers; a mid-sized Ford Fairlane derivative sold in both U.S. and Canadian Mercury dealers for model years 1962-63; and then a full-sized Mercury model in Canada from 1964-76. We saw this one at a weekly cruise night held at the Wurlitzer Building in North Tonawanda.
