FoMoCo reached back into its past when they introduced the 1971 Mercury Comet. The original Comet was a Ford Falcon derivative, and this iteration was even more of a clone — this time of Ford’s über-successful Maverick, with not much more than a different grille and taillights. This was actually the nameplate’s fourth go-round, as other previous Comets were cousins of Ford’s 1966-67 Fairlane, and finally the base model of the 1968-69 Mercury Montego. Saw this one for the second time last week in Tonawanda (the first time my camera didn’t have a memory card — doh!).
