Find me a Mom & Dad car like this 1964 Mercury Comet 404 at a car show and I’ll be making a beeline for it. I’m the guy who passes by rows of high-performance and exotic cars for this type of car, most of which were never saved. Let’s face it, these old family cars were mainly used (and perhaps abused) and eventually discarded — usually at a scrap yard, but every now and then just parked behind the barn where they were forgotten about. This 404 was in the middle of the Comet lineup for 1964 — above the 202, but below the Caliente (a moniker which seemed to fit the 2-door hardtop and convertible, but seemed a bit strange for a 4-door sedan). A grille badge tells us that this one has an optional V-8 under the hood, either the 260 or the 289. Saw it at this year’s annual car show on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at Paddock Chevrolet in Kenmore.
