A FEW CARS YOU’RE NOT LIKELY TO COME ACROSS IN THE MALL PARKING LOT

A FEW CARS YOU’RE NOT LIKELY TO COME ACROSS IN THE MALL PARKING LOT

— from the 87th Geneva International Motor Show

Many of us visit our local annual auto show to kick a few tires, see what’s new, and maybe even do a little shopping.

If you happened to be in Switzerland earlier this month, you could have stopped in to the Geneva show and done all of that, plus see a few world debuts of vehicles we here in Western New York aren’t likely to ever see parked in front of Ted’s:

2017 Bugatti Chiron — As Wolfgang Dürheimer, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. tells us “We have made the best even better.” And better in the Chiron’s case equals an 8.0L W16 engine with four turbochargers rated at 1,500 hp. Hey, if you’re spending 2.4 million Euros on a car it’s only fair to expect a little more… of everything. Bugatti figures on building only 500 Chirons, so get your deposit in now...

If you think the Chiron is exclusive, Mercedes-Benz is building a mere 99 of the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulets. At least it should be much more affordable (the price hasn’t been officially announced, but Car and Driver pegs it to be in the half-million Euro range). This thing started life as an M-B Geländewagen, to which was added a twin-turbocharged V-12 and an extra 22.8 inches of wheelbase. The back portion of the roof was replaced with a folding fabric top, under which sits a third row of seats, all the more better for those sitting back there to see. And be seen…

H600 by Pininfarina — most of us recognize the Pininfarina name as that of a design house — an eclectic design house which have had their hands in projects ranging from early 1950s Nashes to mid-1970s Alfa Romeos to modern-day Volvos. The H600 is a concept car — a joint venture with Hong Kong’s Hybrid Kinetic Group. It’s powered by HK’s micro-turbine engine which can charge the car’s battery pack or power the car’s electric motors (which are said to produce around 800 hp). No official word on whether or not it will ever go into production…

And finally —

David Brown Speedback GT
— no, I never heard of him/it either. Brown is a businessman/car lover whose company has taken a Jaguar XKR convertible and turned it into the handmade coupe you see here, retaining the Jag’s running gear. Your approximately £495,000 get you a bespoke interior with plenty of wood and leather; a picnic bench which pops out of the boot; and, maybe most importantly, a handmade aluminum body, of which only 100 are to be built — another very exclusive club, indeed…
