SUMMERTIME, AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY…

SUMMERTIME, AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY…

by Jim Corbran

Because we’re approaching the middle of the Summer, it seems like as good a time as any to take a look at the new convertible market. This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I’m tired and sweaty and feeling the increasing effects of cabin fever as I trudge along on yet another mind-numbing remodeling project in our 140-year-old house. Yes, there’s no place I’d rather NOT be than right here, right now. The open road beckons…

For very small families:

  • Nissan 370Z – this two-seater was recently named the Best Performance Roadster by the Southern Automotive Media Association at their annual “Topless in Miami” event (before the letters start pouring in, it’s an event celebrating the convertible). From $41,820…
  • Mazda MX-5 Miata – another two-seater, it’s currently one of the most popular convertibles in the world, probably because it’s also one of the most reasonably-priced convertibles in the world. And as a bonus, it’s a real hoot to drive (starting at $24,915)…
  • Mini – technically a four-passenger car, the back seat is best used for children, pets, packages, or that annoying friend of yours who always tags along and disappears just as your server brings the check. Starting at $26,700 (paint — any paint except Moonwalk Gray — is extra!)…

If you need a little more room:

  • Buick Cascada – includes a 1.6L turbo four, and heated steering wheel & front seats, for those days when it’s really too chilly to put the top down, but you probably will anyway because hey, you just bought a convertible! Pricing starts at $33,065…
  • Volkswagen Beetle — (top of page) well I did say a little more room. Not a huge car by any means, the Beetle convertible, IMHO, is the best-looking Beetle on the lot — even with the top up. That’s really something to consider, as most of the time, unless you’re moving to Honolulu, you’ll be looking at it with a raised roof. From a modest $24,725…

Maybe you have a bigger budget:

  • BMW 6 Series – if what you desire is s finely put together cabriolet with a little more heft and a lot more power, this Bavarian might be just what you’re looking for. Under the long, graceful hood lies an inline turbocharged 3.0L six, which puts out 315 hp. Handsome top up or down. Starting at $86,700…
  • Bentley Continental Supersports – from the land of go-big-or-stay-home comes this British super drop-top with a W12 engine under the hood rated at 700 hp. With a zero-to-sixty time of just 3.7 seconds, you’ll want to make sure that your sun bonnet is tied firmly under your chin. If you must ask, Car and Driver reports a starting price of $325,325…

Now, excuse we while I clean up and Google my nearest Bentley dealership.
